Workshop Protocol:

From August 16 to August 17, Brazilian and German Scientists discussed about the Brazilian participation in the FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) experiment for the first time. It was the first FAIR-Brazil meeting.

The members of the German FAIR delegation present the FAIR project as well as specific experiments to about 30 representatives of the Brazilian physics community.

Presentations of the German delegation:

  • Prof. Dr. Zbigniew Majka, FAIR Joint Core Team - Overview of the FAIR project
  • Dr Jacek Gierliñski, Chair of the International Steering Committee for the FAIR Project - Organisation and status of the FAIR project
  • Thomas Stoehlker, GSI Darmstadt - Presentation of APPA research programAPPA: Atomic and plasma physics, and applied sciences in the bio medical, and materials sciences.
  • Peter Senger, GSI Darmstadt - Presentation of CBM research program; CBM: Physics of hadrons and quarks in compressed nuclear Matter, hyper-nuclear matter.
  • T. Nilsson, University of Göteborg (Sweden) - Presentation of NuSTAR research program; NuSTAR: Structure of nuclei, physics of reactions, nuclear astrophysics and radioactive ion beams
  • K. Peters, GSI Darmstadt - Presentation of PANDA research program; PANDA: Hadron structure and spectroscopy, strange and charm physics, hypernuclear physics with anti-proton beams
  • Dieter Frekers, University Münster - Brazilian Center at the University of Münster

Brazilian physicists presented their current research activities related to FAIR research program.

The Brazilian physics community and the FAIR representatives jointly agreed that a more intensive collaboration will have benefits on the two sides in various levels. An example is the opportunity for the Brazilian research institutes and high-tech industry, to promote and develop cutting edge technologies with the international partners in the field of Technologies.

Further one, the participants decided to intensify the cooperation and to build a FAIR-Brazil working group which should meet at least once a year, and the individual experiment collaborations groups should meet twice a year.

To provide financial Funding for the collaboration, efforts will be undertaken to encourage funding agencies, both domestic and international, to support FAIR related research in Brazil. As an immediate result of this workshop an exchange program for PhD students and post-doctoral fellows should be established.
