GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. GSI Biophysics is an interdisciplinary department in the field of physical and biological radiation research, especially for ion beams. GSI is a worldwide leader in the research of ion beams for cancer therapy. In a pilot project between 1997 and 2008, 440 patients were successfully treated with a novel scanned ion beam technique. This technology was subsequently transferred conceptually identically to several clinical centers treating more than 30.000 patients annually with great success.

in Fulltime (100%) starting from 1st of January 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is to be placed in the group Immune system and tissue radiobiology in the research field of immunotherapy in combination with radiotherapy.

Scientific topic: The candidate will perform preclinical research, dedicated to the combination of radiotherapy with innovative approaches of immunotherapy, beyond checkpoint inhibitors. The combination with irradiation will be tested in particular with regard to anti-tumor vaccination strategies and the inhibition of complement factors. For radiation exposure, conventional photon therapy and carbon ion radiotherapy will be compared.

 

  Requirements:

 

  • PhD in biology or related fields
  • The candidate should have a background in immunology and can contribute with their expertise in an interdisciplinary team of biologists and physicists in projects with international collaborators
  • Excellent knowledge in the field of immunology and strong interest for tumor therapy
  • Experience in immunophenotyping and other immunological methods
  • Experience in methods of cellular and molecular biology are a plus
  • Experience with animal handling (FELASA B certificate) is also a plus.

  • Good English language skills and enjoying work in an international environment
  • German language skills are a plus
  • Excellent ability to work in a team and a high degree of flexibility as well as autonomy.

This position is temporary for two years. The salary is based on the collective agreement for public employees (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst - TVöD (Bund)).
